By Chance, As Observed

about

No keyboards were harmed during the recording of this live piece; however, a number of controller knobs, carefully mapped onto a number of appropriate parameters, were well tweaked.

I was thinking about the Trouvelot lithograph (actually a chromolithograph, apparently) depicting the meteor shower of 13-14 November, 1868, and looking out of my studio window into a very clear Norfolk sky. The I fired up one synth, mapped some controller knobs, and pressed record. I had the idea that it might be useful for a collaborative project that's bubbling away, but in the end it was far too abstract for it.

Try listening in the same way as I recorded it – with the lights off and the night sky pressing down on you. You may even see a meteor. If you do, by chance, ensure that you remember it - as observed.

Thanks to Étienne Léopold Trouvelot, whose lithograph inspired me to play some sounds with the lights off, and the blinds up.
