An Excellent Adventure

about

On 19th August 1960, Belka ("Squirrel") and Strelka ("Little Arrow") blasted off from Baikonur Site 1/5 (later to be known as "Gagarin's Start"), in Kazakhstan.

They were squeezed inside the Korabl-Sputnik 2 satellite capsule, which was powered out into orbit using a Vostok rocket. They then spent a day in space, orbiting the Earth 17 times - becoming the first "Earthlings" to do so.

On 20th August, they landed safely near Orsk, in Russia, close to the border with Kazakhstan. Their parachute had successfully opened and they were recovered safe and well. They went on to become major celebrities and they paved the way for Yuri Gagarin to follow them the following year.
